Richard Berteaux was a professional architect and Professor Emeritus in the UC Davis department of Environmental Design; Dr. Berteaux also sat on the City of Davis Historical Resources Management Commission. He is widely known for his work with color in architecture, some examples of which can be see in Davis. He had a stated interest in "vernacular and environmentally responsive architecture."
Richard Berteaux was born in Los Angeles, California where he attended UCLA before attending the Sorbonne in Paris for a time as well as receiving a Bachelor of Architecture degree from UC Berkeley and an MS from Stanford University in Urban Design. For his work, Berteaux has received local, regional, statewide and national awards. Some of these design awards include a national award of Special Recognition for The Lofts, a state-wide award of Honorable Mention for the renovation/reuse design of Tan Orthodontics in Woodland (a 1900s two story bungalow), an award of Merit for Village Park Apartments in Sacramento (a 50-unit low-income housing project in Sacramento), and an award of Honor for his design of the Yoder residence (a climate-sensitive hillside residence in Winters).
He died March 25, 2017 after being diagnosed with cancer in 2013.
