Building on 2013 Planning Notes and the priority-setting that was done on the Feb. 28, 2013 meeting, let's use this document to chart how we want to get to our goals and what we will need in order to get there.

How about this template for every goal?:

GOAL: Is there an ultimate goal for the wiki? What do we hope to achieve with the wiki?

  • Stab 1: The goal of Oakland Wiki is to build a RICH KNOWLEDGE BASE of information about Oakland that is INCLUSIVE OF THE MANY COMMUNITIES OF OAKLAND with the ultimate goal of COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT.
  • Stab 2:

Goal: History: Build a rich Oakland history on the wiki

  • Some of our most dedicated editors are historians and we are a huge part of the way towards building a rich history of Oakland on the wiki. Much work remains!

Strategies: history editathons, engaging with prominent local historians (who are actually very accessible!) and local history groups (Oakland Heritage Alliance, Friends of the Oakland History Room), investigating digitization possibilities to get primary archival materials online.

Necessary steps:

Prerequisites and challenges: time, there's never enough time.

Areas of opportunity and existing resources: good friends at the Oakland History Room, new friends at AAMLO, prominent local historians (who are actually very accessible!) and local history groups (Oakland Heritage Alliance, Friends of the Oakland History Room), knowledgeable oakwikians!

Related goals: libraries, museums, digitization, digital archive

Goal: Library: Infiltrate the libraries!

  • There are many opportunities for collaborating with the library and there are many librarians who are enthusiastic to work with us. Can an Oakland-wikian-in-residence be a possibility?

Strategies: strategy currently unclear. current strategy involves regular activities at the history room and past one-off activities with Youth Leadership Council at the Teen Zone. future strategy should prioritize areas of the library to get involved with and how best to get involved.

Necessary steps:

Prerequisites and challenges: time. librarians need us to take the lead and propose ideas, programs, and stick with things.

Areas of opportunity and existing resources:

  • Existing resources: very good friends at the library. specific groups that we are already friends with: Oakland History Room, Main Library Teen Zone (room for opportunity at teen zones at other branches).
  • Areas of opportunity: people we could become friends with: Second Start Adult Literacy Program (something with the Oakland Readers?), any library programs that involve computer education. jamie turbak (chief admin), sharon mckeller (outreach coordinator),
  • Possible events: can do oakwiki training at the library, for library staff. disseminate info about oakwiki at the libraries (stickers, etc.), help the libraries digitize their paper directories and lists of resources, digitization, youth and adult digital literacy education. how can the wiki better help the library disseminate information and serve their patrons?

Goal: Instructional Materials: Develop a complete set of instructional materials for using the wiki. Materials should be in different formats (text, video, etc.) and should be easily applicable for other localwikis.

  • Specific desired outcomes:
    • Instructional materials at different levels (intro, intermediate, etc.) in different formats (text, video, P2PU, paper) which can be easily adaptable to other localwikis, and which themselves can be easily moved into different formats (ex: printed out on a flyer, etc.).
    • Materials and events to train trainers (including ready to go powerpoints, how-tos on planning events, how to teach people to use the wiki, training on advanced features, training on licensing, and more).
    • Moving beyond instructional materials to inspirational materials. Help people understand what the strange activity "sharing my knowledge for fun and power" is all about. Help people come up with their own creative ways to use the wiki.

Goal: Diversity: Ensure that the wiki community is representative of Oakland. The voices, perspectives, and knowledge of the diverse communities of Oakland should be well-represented in the wiki. All communities in Oakland should feel that the wiki is "by and for" them. Planning events and determining the future direction of the wiki should be done by a diverse group of volunteers from different areas of Oakland and different ethnic communities.

Goal: Neighborhoods: Get neighborhoods involved.

  • Develop a reproducible way to engage with neighborhood groups with an outcome that the neighborhood group gets others in their neighborhood interested in the wiki. Move beyond "official" neighborhood groups (or engage with neighborhood groups that are not mostly composed of the most educated and privileged members of the neighborhood). Ultimate dream fantasy goal: neighborhoods use the wiki as their organizing platform.

Goal: Digitization: Oakland Wiki digitization program.

  • There are many historic resources about Oakland that are not digitized. It would be nice to have both digitization hardware (portable scanners/camera setups) and a program that we can offer to groups that want to digitize their archives (answering the question, "well, we have this scanner, so how do we go about digitizing 50,000 photographs?). *Copyright is a key question. This involves educating people about issues in copyright/licensing, being able to suggest best practices for licensing, and getting groups that hold exclusive rights to archival materials (ex: Oakland Tribune, the City) to release them under CC-BY licenses or into the public domain.

Goal: Digital Archive: Solution for long form original content or other archival materials.

  • The problem: There are many unpublished manuscripts, dissertations, essays, and other research that have no home. There are also vast personal collections (ex: 10,000 digital photographs of Temescal history) that also have no home. The wiki may not be the ideal home for these materials, but there doesn't seem to be an existing place to put all of these (internetarchive.org?), especially since many of them are of unclear copyright.
  • The solution: Still unclear. Obvious solution for clearly public domain or otherwise open access materials is internetarchive.org. What is the solution for unpublished works and works with unclear copyright? Possible current lines of thinking are in the following directions: Oakland digital repository, collaborating with existing digital repositories to add content to theirs, privately hosted server filled with stuff (most likely at Sudo Room, possibly a good interim solution to start gathering materials we encounter now to store them for future use), starting an open access publisher.

Goal: Broad Outreach: Broad-based outreach and marketing

  • Most of our outreach thus far has been focused quite narrowly on specific communities, topics, etc. The wiki may now be at a stage where we are ready to widely promote it.
  • Desired output: stickers, business cards, flyers, etc.

Goal: City: Set up an active collaboration with the City and City Council members.

  • We have the opportunity to collaborate with different city staffers and City Council members.
    • City: How do we make use of this resource to develop an ongoing collaboration with the City? How do we make use of the info they have (directories, etc.) and how can we be useful to them (providing a more informal way to share info, no link policy, more frequent updates that are easier for laypeople to do).

Goal: Directories: SOLVE DIRECTORIES.

  • Specifics: State of resource listings as of 3/31/13: In 2012 we imported a list of youth service organizations that was provided by the City. This can be found at the Youth Services Directory. It is unclear how old that directory is (unclear how many of the organizations still exist and how much of the contact info is up to date). The directory also takes a broad approach to categorizing "youth" services and includes things that are also related to families, etc. We only imported the names of organizations. The rest of the info is in this google doc. We also have access to spreadsheets of other directories (elder services, etc.) from the city via this dropbox (can everyone access this?), data.openoakland.org, and data.oaklandnet.com (the city's "data portal"). In 2012 we also met with a staffer at the Oakland Dept of Human Services who loved the wiki, but wasn't sure how we could collaborate with their dept (aside from them providing data). They are (understandably) very strapped, but if we come up with a creative collaboration that would involve minimal time and effort on their part, they would be enthusiastic. Finally, we've just started the Resources entry and we have a basic inventory of existing directories in the Directory of Directories entry.

Strategies:

Necessary steps:

Prerequisites and challenges:

  • Ensuring that informating is findable and relevant to the person who needs services (huge lists of pages tagged "youth sports" are too difficult to wade through).
    • Organizing things by neighborhood tags will help!
  • Ensuring that information is up to date.
  • Deciding whether we want to encourage certain minimal information for resource listings or whether we should just let them develop like all other entries. The Youth Services Directory uses a huge table for every entry (see the example on the entry for A Better Way), but this is only because we received so much information from the city. Huge tables like this are probably not the way to go. I prefer to let the entries develop naturally - people tend to include addresses and phone numbers.
  • How to avoid manual data entry & avoid duplicating information on websites? This may be unavoidable.
  • Organization
    • Feel strongly that letting people have very free reign with tags will increase findability. Some duplication/overlap is okay and is probably helpful to increase the chance that people will find the entry.

Areas of opportunity and existing resources: We have the opportunity to contact organizations to let them know about their entry and encourage them to update their entry (we can also offer trainings, etc.)

Related goals: technical development (maybe), collaboration with the city
