The East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) consists of 65 parks and 15 regional trails on more than 113,000 acres in two counties. Some of the original parks were land formerly owned by the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) and/or its predecessors. The EBRPD headquarters are at 2950 Peralta Oaks Court, near the Dunsmuir Hellman House just off the I-580 freeway.

History

In 1929, EBMUD declared that about 10,000 acres in the East Bay were "surplus to its needs" 2. Advocates envisioned a park running from Wildcat Canyon in Berkeley to Lake Chabot in San Leandro. In 1930, thousands of East Bay citizens joined the East Bay Regional Park Association, which met at the Hotel Oakland to help sponsor the plans. After a vote by people in the proposed district (which passed 71% to 29%), the EBRPD was approved in 1934, and the first meeting of the board was December 10, 1934. They set about planning which land to buy and how to pay for it all.
