James Street is located in the French Hill neighborhood of Saranac Lake, running east-west on the hill west of Broadway. The street is named for James McClelland who owned the land now known as French Hill.

The section now known as James street and McClelland street at one time (1895 and before) was swamp, and during most of the year the outlet for this water was over the rocks at the rear of the present Hallock Block on Broadway. Some water probably came down from the Margaret street section, also. At times in the early Spring I have seen the brook near Hallock Block so large that the culvert under Broadway near the recent Sunoco gas station couldn't accommodate the water and would flow over Broadway, then only a country dirt road with mud 12 inches deep —- thence thru the lumber yard to the Saranac River, near the Fortune furniture store was a foot path or short cut from Broadway to lower Bloomingdale Avenue. A wooden bridge was erected to cross the brook; the bridge was at least 6 or 8 foot long…
